We’re never too small or unknown to be wanted and cherished by God. Never too insignificant to be loved by Him.
“Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion,
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
you taught me wisdom in that secret place.“
Psalm 51:1-6 (NIV)
Wow. Could this Psalm be any more appropriate for us?
In it, David is confessing to God that he really messed up when he went to Bathsheba. He knew that God told him that adultery was wrong, and he did it anyway. That’s something that most folks can get their heads around, even outside of the Christian community.
You do something wrong, it makes someone mad, and then you say you’re sorry. Repeat as needed.
But David knows that Bathsheba isn’t the only wronged party. By David’s blatant disregard for God’s law, God has been wronged.
“Surely I was sinful at birth,” he writes. “Sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.“
David goes even further than a simple apology, by acknowledging that he was always going to get something wrong. It was part of his human nature, and he knew that God knew it. But here, he also acknowledges that God saw him, still forming in his mother’s womb in all of his brokenness and sinfulness, and called David to Himself.
As the Lord God was knitting together a king, He was whispering wisdom and truth into David’s spirit.
And we, as sons and daughters of the Almighty King, are given that same love and care. And His enduring love for us””imperfect beings who will undoubtedly fail in our own strength and wisdom””finds us when we are yet in the womb.
We are never too small or unknown to be wanted and cherished by Him.
We are never too insignificant to be loved by Him.
We were all conceived with sin, but under the promise of Christ’s compassion, too.
And we, as Pro Abundant Life people, embrace that truth and seek to not only lead others into the fullness of that promise… But also to protect the unborn children who are also cherished by the One who sees them with perfect clarity and love.
Then they can call upon that promise, too.
This week, please join me as I pray:
- For the Lord to make us aware of those places in our lives where we have rejected His wisdom and guidance, knowingly or unknowingly, and lead us to repentance.
- For those who are making life and death decisions for their unborn children during the Easter season, that they would be radically changed by an encounter with the Living God, find all of the support that they need, and choose LIFE for their sons and daughters.
- That we, as God’s people, would point those around us to the healing and grace that flows from the foot of the cross without ceasing.
