How Matthew 16:18 Fuels a Pro Abundant Life Mission
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” — Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
A positive pregnancy test can change everything in a moment. Fear rushes in quickly. We know from experience and the research, women immediately start considering, “What will my parents think?”, “What will my boyfriend think?”, “How can I possibly do this right now?”
For many women facing an unplanned pregnancy, those questions are immediate and overwhelming. In those moments, people are often searching for relief, direction, and hope all at once. And in a culture that frequently presents abortion as the easiest or most responsible solution, many feel isolated before they ever hear another option.
Jesus Described a Church That Moves Toward Brokenness
That is what makes Jesus’ words in Matthew 16:18 so powerful. When Jesus said, “the gates of hell shall not prevail” against His church, He was not describing believers hiding from darkness. He was describing a church advancing into broken places with the hope and authority of the gospel.
Gates are defensive structures. Jesus’ picture is one of forward movement. The church was never meant to retreat from hard issues, painful situations, or people in crisis. It was meant to move toward them with truth, compassion, and courage.
This matters in today’s culture surrounding pregnancy decisions. Behind many pregnancy decisions are fear, abandonment, pressure, financial instability, broken relationships, and loneliness. The battle is often far more spiritual and personal than political. And this is where the church has an opportunity to step in differently.
Pregnancy Centers Put Feet to Prayer
Every day, more than 30,000 staff members and volunteers serve at pregnancy centers across the United States and Canada, including the 1,200 affiliates within the Care Net network.
These men and women are often the first people to sit with someone in crisis without judgment. They listen. They pray. They offer ultrasounds, parenting resources, emotional support, and practical care. But most importantly, they introduce people to the transformational hope found in Jesus Christ. As Roland Warren has said, pregnancy center staff and volunteers are “challenging the gates of hell every single day.”
That challenge does not happen through outrage or condemnation. It happens through courageous compassion. It happens when someone stays present with a scared young woman instead of abandoning her. It happens when fathers are invited into responsibility and support instead of being ignored. It happens when churches surround struggling families with community instead of shame. It happens when people not only hear about Jesus, but experience His love through His people.
Pro Abundant Life Means More Than a Single Decision
A Pro Abundant Life vision goes beyond helping someone choose life in one moment. It asks a deeper question:
If a woman is facing an unplanned pregnancy and you could change everything except that she is pregnant, what would you want for her?
The answer cannot stop at birth. We want her to experience hope instead of despair. Community instead of isolation. Discipleship instead of confusion. Strong families instead of generational brokenness. And ultimately, we want her, the child, the father, and the entire family to encounter the abundant life only Jesus can give. That is why many Care Net affiliates serve families long after the pregnancy decision through parenting classes, fatherhood programs, post-abortion healing, discipleship, mentoring, and local church connections.
This mission is not simply about preventing death. It is about helping people truly live.
Prayer Is Part of the Front-Line Work
None of this work happens without spiritual resistance. Pregnancy center staff and volunteers regularly walk into emotionally heavy situations filled with fear, trauma, confusion, and brokenness. That is why prayer matters so deeply. Prayer is not passive. Prayer is part of the battle.
When believers pray for pregnancy centers, they are asking God to strengthen weary workers, soften hearts, protect vulnerable lives, restore families, and open doors for the gospel. And Jesus has already made a promise: the gates of hell will not prevail against His church.
A Simple Prayer for Courage and Compassion
Jesus, strengthen pregnancy center staff and volunteers as they serve women, men, and families in difficult moments. Give them courage, compassion, wisdom, and endurance. Use Your church to bring hope, protect life, strengthen families, and lead people to the abundant life found in You. Amen.
