The power of prayer and a team of compassionate coaches are foundational to Care Net’s Pregnancy Decision Line, which serves women and men at risk for abortion.
Each year, this free, confidential, national hotline connects approximately 4,000 callers with the goal of moving them from a desire to abort to a posture of life, connecting them with a local pregnancy center, and sharing the good news of the Gospel if that door is open. The PDL is a lifeline for men and women facing unexpected pregnancies—95% begin the call determined to abort.
On the Pregnancy Decision Line (PDL), callers are met by trained coaches who offer realistic alternatives to abortion, and referrals to Care Net’s network of 1,200 life-affirming pregnancy centers. PDL coaches often pray with the women and men who are facing pregnancy decisions and in need of hope and encouragement.
Callers are facing a mix of fear, uncertainty, relational pressure, and practical concerns—such as finances, housing, and parenting—while seeking clarity, peace, and reassurance amid life-altering decisions. Each situation also reveals a deep spiritual need for prayer and guidance—PDL coaches are meeting people right in the middle of their decision-making process.
“Our Pregnancy Decision Line is absolutely amazing,” said Roland Warren, Care Net’s CEO and President. “Our coaches, many of whom are nurses, are there to provide emotional and spiritual support around some of the questions that people have: What’s involved in an abortion? What are my options? What are the different community resources I can access to help me make this decision?”
In addition to praying with some callers in real time on the PDL, there is also a host of intercessors on Care Net’s staff and its Abundant Life Prayer Network who fervently pray behind the scenes for precious lives that often hang in the balance. And God is answering their prayers:
- A young mom was considering abortion due to lack of support from her partner. At first, she was hesitant to schedule an appointment with a pregnancy center. However, after a heartfelt conversation, prayer, and learning the importance of an ultrasound, she not only chose life, but agreed to schedule a visit with the pregnancy center. That appointment proved critical, as it revealed an ectopic pregnancy that required emergency surgery.
- A PDL caller had made up her mind. She was going to have an abortion and did not want to hear about other options. A week later, the woman was undecided about what to do with her pregnancy and faced housing and financial challenges. Intercessors continued to pray. On a subsequent call, the coach was ecstatic to learn that this mother was having a baby boy and had decided to move forward with adoption.
- A hard-working mom was pregnant and overwhelmed. She had several children and was considering abortion but scheduled a visit to a pregnancy center for an ultrasound. Intercessors prayed that God would work in her heart as she saw the images of the baby. A follow-up call brought good news! This mom chose life.
As a Pro Abundant Life ministry (John 10:10), Care Net envisions a culture where women and men faced with pregnancy decisions are transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and empowered to choose life for their unborn children and abundant life for their families. In his latest book, The Alternative to Abortion: Why We Must Be Pro Abundant Life, Care Net CEO and President Roland Warren writes that prayer is paramount.
“Care Net has a multitude of strategic gospel-centered initiatives to end abortion. But there’s one initiative that has unlimited power to change hearts, minds, and lives—prayer,” he writes. “We are reminded that our ultimate battle is not against the ‘flesh and blood’ of the abortion provider and those who support them. It’s against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm.”
The impact of Care Net’s ministry is felt one conversation at a time, but it is sustained by the prayers of believers who stand in the gap for women, men, and unborn lives.
