How 1 Corinthians 16:13 Calls Believers to Stand for Life and the Gospel

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13 (ESV)

Courage rarely starts on a stage.

Most of the time, it begins quietly. A burden God places on someone’s heart. A conversation around a kitchen table. A realization that something in the culture is deeply broken—and that followers of Jesus cannot stay silent.

That is how the story of New Life Solutions began.

Courage Often Begins with Obedience

In 1983, Dick and Sandy Yurie sensed God calling them to start a pregnancy center in the Tampa Bay area. They were troubled by a culture increasingly moving away from biblical truth and embracing the idea that human wisdom alone could solve life’s deepest problems.

But instead of giving in to frustration or fear, they chose action.

The young couple organized a community meeting to see if others shared the same burden. Nearly 500 people attended. Among them were Christine and B. Larry Smith, who would later help co-found the ministry.

Looking back, Sandy Yurie described the moment this way:

“We realized that God had all kinds of people in our community who had prayed that He would raise up a local opportunity for them to get involved in the pro-life movement. That was set up by the Holy Spirit.”

What began as a small act of obedience became something much bigger than they imagined.

God Builds Through Ordinary Faithfulness

Today, New Life Solutions continues serving women, men, and families across the Tampa Bay area as part of the Care Net network. Over the years, the ministry has expanded beyond pregnancy support to include restoration ministries, trauma care, youth development, and support for single moms.

More than 10,000 babies have been saved from abortion through the ministry over the last four decades.

But the story is bigger than numbers.

Behind every life saved is a woman who found hope instead of despair. A father who stepped into responsibility. A family that experienced support instead of isolation. A person who encountered the love of Christ through faithful believers willing to show up.

That kind of ministry does not happen overnight.

It is built through ordinary people choosing faithfulness over comfort again and again.

Biblical Courage Is More Than Boldness

When Paul wrote the words of 1 Corinthians 16:13, he was speaking to believers facing pressure, confusion, and opposition. His challenge was simple but urgent: stay alert, stand firm, and be courageous.

Biblical courage is not harshness or anger.

It is steadfastness.

It is remaining faithful when culture shifts and truth becomes unpopular.

To “stand firm in the faith” means we do not allow the world to redefine what God has already made clear about life, family, identity, and truth. But Scripture also reminds us that truth must always be carried with love and compassion.

That is what makes the gospel different.

Jesus never compromised truth, but He also never stopped moving toward broken people with grace.

A Pro Abundant Life Vision Goes Beyond the Moment

That same heart shapes Care Net’s Pro Abundant Life mission today.

This vision is about more than helping someone choose life in a single moment. It is about helping people flourish long after the crisis has passed.

It means supporting mothers instead of abandoning them.

Calling fathers higher instead of writing them off.

Strengthening families instead of simply addressing symptoms.

And ultimately, it means introducing people to the abundant life found only in Jesus Christ.

Real ministry requires courageous presence.

The courage to step toward difficult situations instead of away from them.

The courage to keep loving people when transformation takes time.

And the courage to believe that the gospel still changes lives.

One Act of Faithfulness Can Ripple for Generations

The story of New Life Solutions reminds us that movements often begin with ordinary believers simply saying yes to God.

One meeting.

One prayer.

One step of obedience.

And decades later, thousands of lives have been impacted.

Imagine what God could do through a united Pro Abundant Life movement in communities across the country.

When God’s people choose courage rooted in Christ, He often does far more than they could ever imagine.

A Short Prayer for Courage
