“Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.” — Isaiah 1:17
Throughout the Bible, God reveals His heart for those who are vulnerable. He is the defender of the fatherless, the protector of widows, and the protection for those who have nowhere else to turn. Isaiah 1:17 is more than a command to avoid injustice—it is a call to pursue compassion. God’s people are not merely to recognize need; they are to step into it with love, mercy, and practical action.
That calling is especially relevant for the Church today as it seeks to serve single mothers. For many, single motherhood was never part of the plan. Some are navigating life after an unexpected pregnancy. Others are grieving divorce, abandonment, abuse, or the loss of a spouse. Many carry overwhelming financial burdens while trying to provide emotional and spiritual stability for their children. Behind every stat is a mother wondering if she has enough energy for tomorrow—and children who need hope today.
Jennifer Maggio understands that reality. Before founding The Life of a Single Mom Ministries, Jennifer experienced the hardships of raising children while facing poverty, uncertainty, and tough obstacles. Rather than allowing those experiences to define her, God used them to shape a ministry that has helped churches across the country recognize both the needs and the incredible potential of single mothers.
Her story reminds us that God’s redemption often transforms our deepest pain into opportunities to serve others. Yet Jennifer’s vision has never been simply to build another ministry. Isaiah’s words challenge us to move beyond sympathy toward faithful action.
“Learn to do good.” Doing good requires intentionality. It means noticing the mom sitting alone at church, offering childcare so she can attend Bible study, helping with transportation, providing mentoring, or simply inviting her into authentic Christian community. Compassion is most powerful when it becomes tangible.
“Seek justice.” Biblical justice is more than correcting wrongs—it is ensuring that vulnerable people are treated with dignity because they bear God’s image. Single mothers should never feel invisible within the body of Christ. They deserve to know they belong, not because they have everything together, but because Christ welcomes them.
“Bring justice to the fatherless.” Children flourish when they are surrounded by loving adults who point them toward Jesus. The Church has the privilege of becoming an extended spiritual family—godly men and women investing in children through mentoring, discipleship, friendship, and encouragement. God’s design has always been that His family helps strengthen families.

But they are at their strongest when connected to healthy local churches that continue walking with families long after the initial crisis has passed. Together, pregnancy centers and churches help create communities where mothers are supported, fathers are encouraged, children are valued, and families experience the abundant life Jesus promised (John 10:10).
Every act of kindness reflects the character of God.
- A meal delivered after a long week.
- A mentor who faithfully listens.
- A church that welcomes children with joy.
- A volunteer who reminds a struggling mother that she is not alone.
These ordinary acts of compassion become extraordinary displays of the gospel.
Isaiah reminds us that true worship is demonstrated not only by what we believe but by how we love those who are most vulnerable. When the Church embraces single mothers with grace, practical support, and biblical truth, we reflect the heart of our Savior, who came “to proclaim good news to the poor… to bind up the brokenhearted” (Isaiah 61:1).
May we be the kind of people who don’t simply admire God’s compassion—we embody it.
Father, thank You for Your unfailing love for every mother, every child, and every family. Open our eyes to those who are carrying burdens alone. Help our churches and pregnancy centers become places where single mothers find hope, belonging, practical support, and the life-changing love of Jesus Christ. Use us to reflect Your heart as we seek justice, love mercy, and walk faithfully with those You have entrusted to our care. In Jesus’ name, amen.
