#1 Defining Reproductive Freedom

We must define reproductive freedom as it is—the ability to choose whether or not to reproduce. Logically, this concept should refer to the right to conceive or not to conceive. Sadly, the abortion debate often shifts this definition to include the right to terminate a pregnancy, which is an entirely different matter.

#2 Noticing the Euphemisms

The terms “reproductive rights” and “reproductive freedom” are often used as euphemisms in the abortion debate. These phrases avoid directly addressing the reality of abortion—the termination of a human life. Don’t miss the challenge these euphemisms create for having clear and honest discussion.

Understanding the power of language is crucial in the abortion debate. By asking critical questions and unpacking terms, we can engage in more meaningful discussions about the true nature of reproductive freedom and what it means in today’s society.
